GoldieBlox Video Inspires Girl Engineers with Rube Goldberg Machine + Beastie Boys Girl Power Anthem

goldieblox-rube-goldbergKnown for the headturning Toys R Us pink aisle take over promotional video that went viral earlier this year, but not known nearly well enough in the actual “pink aisle” yet, the makers of GoldieBlox have done it again with this awesome new Rube Goldberg-inspired commercial featuring some kick butt girl engineers.

“It’s time to change. We deserve to see a range. ’Cause all our toys look just the same and we would like to use our brains,” declares the classic Beastie Boys track re-imagined as a girl power anthem.

Today only 11% of all engineers are women. Believing that childhood toys play a major role in limiting (or liberating) girls’ imaginations and therefore career paths, Sterling developed GoldieBlox, an interactive book series and construction set starring Goldie, the kid inventor who loves to build. The idea being that by providing these types of toys to girls and not just boys, the seeds are planted early and equally so when it comes to primarily male-dominated activities and professions they may become more equal as well.

Inventors, Sabrina, Reese and Raven represent what GoldieBlox founder Debbie Sterling hopes will be just the beginning of girls finding their inner engineers. Because it’s not about girls shunning the feminine, it’s about breaking down stereotypes and changing the landscape so that young girls can have the opportunity and encouragement to get their hands dirty and build things, should they so choose.

Here are the full lyrics:

You think you know what we want, girls.
Pink and pretty it’s girls.
Just like the 50′s it’s girls.

You like to buy us pink toys
and everything else is for boys
and you can always get us dolls
and we’ll grow up like them… false.

It’s time to change.
We deserve to see a range.
‘Cause all our toys look just the same
and we would like to use our brains.

We are all more than princess maids.

Girls to build the spaceship,
Girls to code the new app,
Girls to grow up knowing
they can engineer that.

That’s all we really need is Girls.
To bring us up to speed it’s Girls.
Our opportunity is Girls.
Don’t underestimate Girls.
